A graduate of Mercer University School of Medicine, Dr. Burkhalter was appointed Chief Resident at University of Mississippi Medical Center after four years of residency, with several awards for teaching and research excellence. He attained a Master of Education in Clinical Exercise Physiology and a Bachelor of Science in Cellular Biology, both from the University of Georgia in Athens, before entering medical school.
His interests include research and solutions specific to head and neck cancer surgery, allergic skin reactions and allergy emergencies. A wide range of community and faith-based medical service demonstrates his dedication to civic involvement through volunteerism.
He is a diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology and a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy. He is also a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, the Mercer University School of Medicine, the American Academy of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery, Medical Campus Outreach (MCO), the South Carolina Society of Otolaryngology and the Triological Society (American Laryngological, Rhinological and Otological Society).
